Recap From The Practice Parlour

Earlier this month I got to chat with Gina Morgano on The Practice Parlour and we really dug deep on the relationship between productivity and creativity. For anyone that missed our live chat, I wanted to pull a couple quotes from our chat that I feel like really encompassed our time together.

On To- Do Lists

“For a lot of artists, we run on this wheel of always feeling like we have things that we SHOULD be doing. And when we have this never ending to-do list, it’s really hard to put our time and mental energy into being creative.”

“I was being productive because that productivity made me feel successful. Whenever I had checked off a box, I felt like I had accomplished something. Because productivity can be measured, but creativity cannot.”

“We never actually sit down with ourselves to decide how we are going to do things. We have a lot of what we are going to do, but we don’t know how we are going to do it. It’s not WHAT we are doing that causes overwhelm, but the “oh my gosh, how am I going to get this done?” So if you sit down and take the time to plan, that really can be super valuable.”

“ I fall into the trap of sometimes.. I want to check off the quick tasks first so I can do as many as possible all in a row, because that makes me feel really successful... I may have gotten five things done, but were the 5 things really more important than the one big thing that I needed to do?”

On Goal Setting

“If a task doesn’t serve your goals (which feeds your purpose), it shouldn’t be on your to-do list because it isn’t working towards the impact you want to make.”

“We have “New Years Resolution Syndrome” where we say “I WANT TO DO THIS,” but we never look at how to break it down and how that looks on the monthly basis, on a weekly basis, or on the daily basis.”

On Burnout

“Productivity can actually be our greatest tool to avoiding burnout… If burnout is when we feel the inability to make an impact, productivity is the roadmap to make sure everything we are doing is actually working towards our purpose.”

On Quality Vs. Quantity

“When it comes to my creativity, I have control over the quantity of times I show up, not the quality of what comes out of my brain or what comes out of my voice that day.”

“If we are putting good quality of practice time into ourselves, that is the quality we are measuring, but we are not measuring the quality of what is coming out.”

On Judging Our Own Creativity

“ It is our job to show up and give the gift, but we aren’t receiving the gift- the gift isn’t for us. Somebody else is creating a gift for us…. When we judge (our) work, we are robbing what may be the thing that changes someone else’s life.”
